ABOUT THE OPEN DOOR

The Open Door is an entertainment event held once a month in the function hall at Smith church, downtown Hillsborough (the church with the clock in the steeple). There’s lots of free parking and the doors open by 6:30pm. People bring goodies to share and we provide decaf coffee and decaf tea, ice water, and hot cocoa and, of course, the exciting entertainment. Admission is FREE, although donations are gratefully accepted to help us off-set costs. The Open Door entertainment is local and outstanding, and we always brag that our audience is The Best!! The warm and welcoming atmosphere, our wonderful audience and great performers will keep you coming back month after month.

Concert Update - IT WAS A SUCCESS!

We had such fun last night!  What a relief that was to us band members who worked our way through rehearsals on both Friday and Saturday that were fraught with challenges.  It's said in the entertainment industry that a bad rehearsal means a good show.  We can vouch for the veracity of that addage now, without a doubt!

As the room filled last night, there was lots of hugging and conversation and laughter.  The Just Desserts band members were part of it all and loving it.  It felt so much like an Open Door night, which is always like that - warm and welcoming.  At 7pm, Smith church's interim minister, Charlie Barnes, welcomed everyone and then passed the mic to Rusty Wightman, who introduced the band.  And we were off!

Of course there was music (it was a concert, after all), and it felt as tho it sounded good from up on stage, but the audience reaction was the real tell.  JP and Barbara got applause after solos, as did Pam when she joined us to sing and also play the bass.  Many folks smiled and sang along, and we had a group of girls right in the front row whom I thought might explode, dancing, into the aisles!  We were honored to receive a standing ovation at the conclusion of the show.

The band headed downstairs with the rest of the crowd and enjoyed all the luscious desserts that were served by the church folks.  The buffet table was lovely in its harvest themed trimmings, presenting us with such yummies as lemon squares (I'm so grateful there was one left for me by the time I got to the table!), cookies, brownies, several types of cakes, and ice cream, as well as coffee, tea and juice.  Quite the lovely and delicious spread for us to enjoy while we all talked about the concert and caught up with friends we hadn't seen in a while.

This was one successful evening and a concerted effort (pun intended) and we thank everyone who bought a ticket or made a donation, all the people of Smith church who put together the refreshments and their presentation and cleaned up after us all.  Special thanks to Herm & Yvonne Wiegelman, Sharon Dowling, and Barbara Daley who put up all the posters, to Premier Printing for printing the posters for us at a discount, and to Leigh and Joyce Bosse for running an ad for free in the Messenger.  And a very special thank you to Rusty Wightman who stepped in to run the sound board for us when the need arose at the last minute!  And what a great job he did.  Thank you all, once again!!

When I get the total from the Deacons, I'll post the amount that we, all of us working together, raised to benefit Smith church's "Paint the Church" fund.  And if anyone took photos or has something to comment, please do share!!  Let everyone know how great a time it was for all who participated in this fundraiser.

We're looking forward to seeing you all at the next Open Door, this Friday, 11/2!

Toni, for Just Desserts
