ABOUT THE OPEN DOOR

The Open Door is an entertainment event held once a month in the function hall at Smith church, downtown Hillsborough (the church with the clock in the steeple). There’s lots of free parking and the doors open by 6:30pm. People bring goodies to share and we provide decaf coffee and decaf tea, ice water, and hot cocoa and, of course, the exciting entertainment. Admission is FREE, although donations are gratefully accepted to help us off-set costs. The Open Door entertainment is local and outstanding, and we always brag that our audience is The Best!! The warm and welcoming atmosphere, our wonderful audience and great performers will keep you coming back month after month.

GREAT Open Door Tonight

Well, here we sit, Rick & I, vegging together on our couch after tonight's Open Door.  It's 11pm and we're feeling satisfied and pretty darned happy.  The coffee house always gives us a great evening because we get to do music with our friends, watch and listen to our friends on stage, and chat and laugh with our friends.

The acts were all so wonderful!  Seriously -- first, JP Stohrer, in his "Bert" persona, entertained us with funny stories from Down East, Maine.  Next up was Marek Bennett with his lovely banjo.  He played several Civil War era songs and enlightened us on some attitudes and struggles of the 1800s.  Greg Gage took the stage with aplomb and played a mellow set of original songs.  Then Just Desserts played our set.  I heard it was pretty good.  Felt good from our side.

During the intermission, Doug & Judy Hatfield sold tickets to Just Desserts' upcoming concert which will benefit the "Paint the Church" fund.  We all enjoyed some chatting, goodies and beverages.  Then, suddenly it seemed, it was time for the Featured Act.

The Bible Hill Boys kicked off their set with The Open Door Anthem, always a huge hit with the Open Door crowd.  The Boys were spot on with their intricate melodies and heartfelt and clever lyrics.  They had us laughing, singing along, and crying.

Cathy Main coaxed Marek into bringing his banjo on stage and joining Cathy in her set.  They were marvelous together!  It's a wonderful thing about The Open Door performers that they support and encourage each other and often work together.  Or is it all play . . . . ?  Doug Farrell ended the evening with his beautiful guitar playing and eloquent, melodious songs.

Thank you to everyone who performed, all who brought goodies to share, and to our audience who, as we always say, is The Best!!  I'd like to send out special thanks to everyone who stayed a little late to help us put things to rights in the function hall.  Tonight we were locking up the door at 10:30pm -- only 1 hour to get it all done and it's all thanks to the community spirit of the folks who love The Open Door!

Remember to tell all your friends about the benefit concert on Saturday, 10/27, and get your tickets early.  And we will see you all at the next Open Door, Friday, November 2nd!
